MANCHESTER, 2018
Our Manchester project in 2018 brought the Stories of the Streets project into its own. We partnered with Big Issue North, Barnabus and LifeShare to bring together a diverse cohort of photographers, and teamed up with social workers embedded in each organisation to conduct semi-structured interviews, from which dozens of stories were produced. Local artists helped curate the exhibition, which included paintings and other offerings from our partner charities’ respective arts programmes. This edition of the project also led us to build our first modular, interactive exhibition space, which we assembled in the centre of city’s busiest indoor shopping area, using our visibility to also broadcast accessible and up-to-date information about the changing landscape of homelessness in the city, produced in partnership with local experts, with thousands of passers-by stopping to engage and learn. Our exhibit was accompanied by several events, attended by many of our photographers. These events included a Citizens Debate, with a panel consisting of seasoned social workers, third sector leaders, researchers and one of the photographers themselves, fielding questions from members of the public about the best ways to engage in long-term solutions.
